MW CHAMPIONSHIPS - DAY ONE RECAP | SDSU-NEVADA BOX SCORE

FORT COLLINS, Colo. -

On a day full of unexpected changes, the San Diego State women's tennis team upset Nevada at the Mountain West Championships on Thursday. The 11th-seeded Aztecs topped the seventh-seeded Wolf Pack, 4-3, to advance to the quarterfinals. SDSU will face No. 2 seed New Mexico at 4 p.m. MT tomorrow.

Originally scheduled for a 10 a.m. MT start at the University Tennis Complex on the campus of Colorado State, the location and time of Thursday's match was changed due to weather conditions. SDSU and Nevada would face off at 1 p.m. MT at the Fort Collins Country Club instead.

In doubles play Blaga Delic and Shelia Morales gave the Wolf Pack the advantage as the duo topped Taylor Lederman and Isabelle Hoorn on the first court. Adriana Gergelyova and Claudia Herrero combined to defeat Jana Buth and Paola Diaz de Regules in the second spot, 6-3, to claim the point. In the third position, Kennedy Davis and Tami Nguyen downed Sara Korzeniecki and Monika Magusiak, 6-2.

As singles action got underway, Davis made sure that her efforts on the court went towards the team goal as she handled Gergelyova, 6-3, 6-1, in the third spot. On court No. 1, Nguyen fell to Herrero, 6-2, 6-2. In the second position, Morales seemed to put Nevada in the driver's seat as she brought the Wolf Pack within one point of victory as she defeated Buth, 6-4, 6-4. Aztec senior, Hoorn, would not go away quietly and downed Korzeniecki in the fifth position to give SDSU life, 6-3, 7-6. Court No. 6 saw the score knotted as Lederman held off Magusiak, 6-1, 7-5. The match was decided in the fourth spot as Diaz fought back after dropping her first set. The Aztec rallied and clinched the 4-3 victory for San Diego State as she finished off Delic, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2.

The Aztecs will move onto the quarterfinals where they will face second-seeded New Mexico at 4 p.m. MT. The Lobos received a first-round bye and Friday's match against SDSU will be their first of the tournament. San Diego State and New Mexico did not face during the 2016 dual-match season. The Lobos posted a 14-6 overall record and went a perfect 5-0 in conference play. For their efforts, the Lobos hold the 56th spot in the ITA rankings.
