SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team will head to Sacramento to compete in the 2016 Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships. The two-day regatta will be held April 30-May 1 on Lake Natoma and hosted by the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The first race of the weekend for SDSU will come in the varsity four event at 10:30 am. The Aztecs will face host Sacramento State and two crews from Saint Mary's in their heat.

The next race of the day will come at 11:40 a.m. in the novice eight showdown. San Diego State will take on two UCSB crews, Humboldt State, Seattle University and California.

At 1:50 p.m. SDSU will enter two crews which will row in the second eight event and take on Stanford, two Sacramento State boats and Saint Mary's.

The final race of the day for the Aztecs will come at 3 p.m. when the varsity eight will face Stanford, Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Seattle University and Santa Clara.

"The team has been training very well and is excited to be back in race mode," said head coach Bill Zack. "Everybody who is racing at WIRAs will also be competing at the American Athletic Conference Championships, although the events offered at each of the regattas are slightly different beyond the three NCAA events. We love going up to Sacramento because of the quality of the race course and the local organizing committee. This year both the American and NCAA Championships will be held on Lake Natoma. Many of our current rowers are natives of the Sacramento and San Francisco area and we have family members flying in from as far away as New Zealand so we should have a large Aztec fan showing."

Saturday's results will determine the racing schedule for the remainder of the regatta.

Following the WIRA Championships, San Diego State will return to Lake Natoma for the American Athletic Conference Championship on May 14.
