Refreshed San Diego State Plays Host to Utah State in Weekend Series
The San Diego State softball team plays host to Utah State in a weekend series at SDSU Softball Stadium. The Aztecs (24-19, 6-9 MW), who had a rare weekend (April 22-24) off from competition, welcome the Aggies (24-21, 10-8 MW) at 6 p.m. PT Friday, 6 p.m. PT Saturday and noon PT Sunday. Friday's game will be broadcast on the Mountain West Network.
SDSU is coming off a 2-1 series win at San José State from April 15-17.
San Diego State is hitting .291 as a team with 20 home runs, 33 stolen bases and 201 runs in 43 games (4.67 runs per games). Sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) continues to lead the Aztecs in multiple offensive categories, despite missing 16 of the team's 43 games with injuries, including batting average (.451), on-base percentage (.535), slugging percentage (.915), runs (26), home runs (9) and RBIs (23, tied). Sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) is hitting .373 with 24 runs and a team-high 13 stolen bases, while senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) (.338, 25 R, 19 RBI, 10 2B) is also hitting over .300 for SDSU. Freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) (.293, 4 HR, 21 RBI), junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) (.288) and junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) (.287, 5 HR, 21 RBI, team-high 17 BB) are statistically the team's next-best hitters.
San Diego State has used a balanced pitching staff so far, combining for a 3.89 team ERA from junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) (11-8, 3.64 ERA, 117.1 IP), freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (2-1, 3.74 ERA, 43.0 IP), junior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) (2-2, 4.02 ERA, 38.1 IP) and sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (9-7, 4.25 ERA, 84.0 IP).
