TUCSON, Ariz. ââ'¬" The San Diego State men's golf team slipped two notches into fourth place on Saturday after posting a collective 4-over-par 292 during the second round of the 2016 Mountain West Championship at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.

With their score, the Aztecs find themselves seven shots behind front-runner New Mexico (-11) and five strokes in back of second-place UNLV (-9) with a 36-hole total of 4-under 572, while Fresno State (-5) occupies the third spot on the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course. In addition, Colorado State (-3) and Nevada (-3) are deadlocked in the fifth position heading into Sunday's final round.

On a day when the average score in the 55-player field increased by over one stroke from 72.25 to 73.38, four of the five Aztec starters lost ground on the individual leaderboard, including PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) and Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy), who each carded a 72 during the second round.

Samiere offset two bogeys with four birdies on the day, but still stumbled two places into a tie for eighth at 3-under 141, as a double-bogey on the par-3, 170-yard No. 4 thwarted his progress. Despite the hiccup, the SDSU sophomore remains just five shots off the pace, trailing leader Corey Eddings of Nevada (-8), who owns a slim one-stroke advantage over New Mexico's Sam Kim (-7), while Fresno State's Trevor Clayton and Logan France of Boise State are tied for third at 6-under.

In addition, Michelini slipped four spots into a tie for 17th at 1-under 143, joining fellow teammate Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who dropped from the sixth position on the heels of a second-round 74.

Michelini got off to a blazing start with three straight birdies, but was unable to sustain momentum after carding a trio of birdies on a four-hole stretch from No. 6-9. The Aztec senior rebounded with two additional birdies after the turn, including a successful conversion on the par-3, 183-yard No. 12, which ranked as the fourth-toughest green on Saturday. However, the SDSU captain was stung by two bogeys on his next two holes before closing with four straight pars.

Mendoza, meanwhile, was forced to regroup after suffering a triple-bogey on the par-4 No. 1, eventually getting back to 1-over for the day on the strength of four birdies against two bogeys. However, the Aztec junior and Francis Parker High alum was unable to avoid another bogey on his finishing hole, the par-4, 470-yard 18th.

Elsewhere, Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was the lone SDSU player to display upward mobility on Saturday, climbing three places into a tie for 36th at 4-over 148 despite matching Mendoza with a 74. Ree's round was highlighted by a pair of eagles on the par-5, 535-yard No. 2 and the par -5 511-yard 11th. The Aztec senior also sank two birdies, but four bogeys, along with two double-bogey-5s at No. 7 and No. 17, prevented a steeper ascent.

The Scarlet and Black was also represented by sophomore Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.), who experienced an unfortunate drop of 34 places into the 47th position with a combined 7-over 151 after struggling with an 80. Abercrombie found birdies elusive on Saturday, while six bogeys and a double sandbagged his round.

The Mountain West Championship concludes on Sunday when San Diego State tees off with Colorado State for the final round, starting at 9 a.m. PT on hole No. 1. A live scoring link will be available courtesy of Golfstat on GoAztecs.com.
