TUCSON, Ariz. -- The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself tied for second place at the 2016 Mountain West Championship after shooting an 8-under par 280 on Friday during the opening round at OMNI Tucson National Golf Club.

With their total, the Aztecs matched their second-lowest first-round score in a MW tournament, sharing the second spot with New Mexico, five strokes in back of Fresno State (-13) on the par-72, 7,194-yard Catalina Course. In addition, Colorado State (-7) lurks in fourth place just one shot behind SDSU and the Lobos, followed closely by Nevada (-6) and UNLV (-2) heading into Saturday's second round.

The Aztecs were led by junior Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) and sophomore PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), who both shot a 3-under 69 to finish the day tied for sixth on the individual leaderboard. The SDSU teammates completed nearly identical rounds, offsetting one bogey with four birdies apiece.

With their respective performances, Mendoza and Samiere sit four shots behind front-runner Corey Eddings of Nevada, who fired an opening-round 65, while Fresno State's Trevor Clayton occupies the runner-up position at 6-under 66, followed by Drew McCullough of Wyoming (-5), Air Force's Brenden Bone (-4) and Andrej Blevins of New Mexico (-4).

In addition, Aztec senior Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) and sophomore Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) remain tied for 13th after each posted a 71 on Friday. Despite two bogeys on his final five holes, Michelini managed a red figure on the strength of an eagle at the par-5, 511-yard No. 10, while Abercrombie countered three bogeys with consecutive birdies on holes 2-3, as well as the 10th and 11th greens.

Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who ended the day in a tie for 39th on the heels of an opening-round 74. After a wobbly start with three bogeys on the front nine, the Aztec senior got to 1-under after sinking the last of his four birdies at No. 10. However, a double-bogey on the par-4 13th and a bogey at No. 18 stymied his progress up the ladder.

The Mountain West Championship continues on Saturday when San Diego State tees off alongside Fresno State and New Mexico for the second round, beginning at 9:40 a.m. PT on hole No. 1. A live scoring link will be available courtesy of Golfstat on GoAztecs.com.
