RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- San Diego State senior Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) has been named Mountain West Women's Golfer of the Year in a vote of the league's nine head coaches on Wednesday following the final round of the conference championship at Mission Hills Country Club.
With her award, Henrikson becomes just the second Aztec ever to earn top player honors from the MW after Christine Wong received the same recognition in 2012. The all-conference teams and the league's freshman of the year winner will be announced next week.
Henrikson has posted six top-10 individual placements so far this season, highlighted by a pair of medal-winning performances at the Golfweek Conference Challenge last fall and the Westbrook Spring Invitational in February. She also logged two third-place finishes at the season-opening Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational during the fall slate and last month at the Bruin Wave Invitational.
For her efforts, Henrikson garnered Mountain West women's golfer of the month accolades in September to go along with conference player of the week distinction on March 2.
Henrikson leads the league with a team-best 71.63 scoring average in eight stroke-play tournaments thus far and tops the squad with 11 rounds below par, including nine in the 60s. At the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown last October, she shot a career-best 66 during the second round en route to a 10th-place tie.
Henrikson is coming off a seventh-place tie at the Mountain West Championship this week, where she carded a 7-over 223. She was one of just six golfers to break par in the final round, shooting a 1-under 71, highlighted by an eagle on the par-5 No. 2 green. Entering the week, she was 10th-ranked player in the nation according to Golfstat.
For her career, Henrikson has amassed 24 top-20 finishes, 13 top-10 performances and 10 top-fives. On April 11, she was named San Diego State's female student-athlete of the year during the Aztec athletic department's 22nd annual scholar-athlete banquet.
Henrikson and 22nd-ranked SDSU will await word of a probable postseason berth when the NCAA regional bids are announced next Monday, April 25, on The Golf Channel at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.
