SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team wrapped the first day of the 43rd annual San Diego Crew Classic on Saturday. The Aztecs advanced two boats to their respective grand finals. The varsity eight and the third varsity eight will contend for their overall titles on Sunday.
The varsity eight crew participated in SDSU's first race of the day and posted the school's best results. The Aztecs finished in first place in their heat with a time of 7 minutes, 00.420 seconds. SDSU was followed by Old Dominion (7:01.074), Sacramento State (7:01:808), St. Joseph's (7:07.129), Humboldt State (7:12.615) and Villanova (7:17.599). San Diego State's first-place finish qualified it for the grand final which will be held on Sunday morning at 9:44 a.m. The Aztecs will face Tennessee, Miami, Loyola Marymount, Kansas State and Old Dominion.
The varsity four was the next SDSU boat to see competition. The Aztecs finished in fifth place (8:21.786) behind first place finishers Texas (7:35.204), second place UCLA (7:44.344), third place Kansas State (8:15.496), and fourth place Saint Mary's (8:17.710). With the fifth-place finish, SDSU will not move on to compete in another race at the regatta.
The second varsity eight was next up and recorded a fifth-place showing. California would be the top finisher (6:40.747) followed by Wisconsin (6:48.585), San Diego (6:54.483), Sacramento State (7:10.185), SDSU (7:10.977), and UC San Diego (7:29.937). With their result, the Aztecs advanced to the third final later on Saturday afternoon. In their final, SDSU crossed the line in the middle of the pack, in third place. Miami finished in the top spot (7:18.776), followed by Fordham (7:23.971), SDSU (7:27.185), Loyola Marymount (7:28.035), Saint Mary's (7:49.368) and UC San Diego (7:55.962).
The final race of the first day for San Diego State came in the Women's Open in which the third eight competed. The Aztecs finished fourth of six teams. California came out on top (7:02.499) followed by Stanford (7:16.997), British Columbia (7:43.844), SDSU (7:49.911), Chapman (8:58.604) and UC Santa Barbara (9:15.929). San Diego State will advance to the Grand Final on Sunday at 1:23 p.m. SDSU will face California, Texas, Stanford, Gonzaga, British Columbia, USC and Sacramento State.
The second four will enter its only race of the weekend on Sunday at 11:52 a.m. The Aztecs will compete against USC, USD, UCLA and Sacramento State in the Women's Collegiate B Final.
Following Sunday's races, SDSU will take on UC San Diego on April 15 and UC Santa Barbara on April 16. Both races will be held on Mission Bay.
