RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- The San Diego State women's golf team dropped one notch into third place at the 2016 Mountain West Championship on Wednesday after carding a 16-over par 304 during the second round at Mission Hills Country Club.

With their total, the Aztecs find themselves two shots in back of second-place Fresno State with a 36-hole total of 24-over 600 on the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

Albeit one stroke, front-runner UNLV (+13) was the lone school to improve on its collective score from the previous round, posting a 294 to open a nine-shot lead over the aforementioned Bulldogs (+22) in the team standings, while San José State (+31) sits in fourth place behind SDSU, followed by New Mexico (+35) and Colorado State (+38).

On a day when the average individual score in the 45-player field increased from 77.18 to 77.42, the Aztecs were unable to keep pace with the Rebels, carding just four birdies overall on the back nine against 12 bogeys, two doubles and one triple.

SDSU sophomore Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.), who entered the second round in a three-way tie for first place on the individual leaderboard, slipped into tie for third with Guðrun Björgvinsdottir of Fresno State at 3-over 147 after both golfers posted a 76.

Despite three birdies, including a successful conversion on the par-5, 485-yard 18th, which ranked as the fifth-toughest hole of the second round, Lacey stumbled out of the top position after suffering as rash of five bogeys as well as a double on the par-5 No. 9. Still, the Torrey Pines alumna remains just four strokes off the pace heading into Wednesday's finale, trailing UNLV's Alexandra Kaui (-1), who was the lone competitor to post a red number on Tuesday after shooting a 71, while Katrina Prendergast of Colorado State (E) lurks in second.

On the flip side, fellow classmate Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) was the lone SDSU competitor to display upward mobility during the second round, climbing four spots into a tie for seventh at 5-over 149 on the strength of a team-best 74. The 2015 conference runner-up was a model of consistency on her first 13 greens, logging 11 pars to go with birdies at No. 9 and No. 11. However, Chaves endured a rough stretch on holes 14-16, carding two bogeys sandwiched around a double, which prevented a steeper ascent.

The three remaining Aztec starters were saddled with 77s on Tuesday, including Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah), who tumbled four places into a tie for 15th at 8-over 152. The SDSU junior was unable to generate much momentum after recording five bogeys against one birdie on the par-3 No. 5.

Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden) experienced an identical fate, cascading four spots into the 15th position as well after suffering three bogeys and a triple over a crucial five-hole span on the back nine. The Aztec senior was even through No. 10, offsetting a bogey with a birdie on the fifth green. Despite the hiccup, however, Henrikson finished strong with two pars and a birdie at the 18th.

Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who remains in 29th place with a combined 12-over 156. The SDSU sophomore was even after eight holes, countering two bogeys with a pair of birdies on the second and seventh greens. However, three bogeys on her final 10 holes, to go with a double on the par-4 No. 12, thwarted her advance.

The Mountain West Championship wraps up on Wednesday when San Diego State tees off alongside Fresno State and UNLV once again for the final round, starting at 8:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1. A live scoring link courtesy of Golfstat will be available on GoAztecs.com.
