RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. -- San Diego State's Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) fired a 1-under-par 71 on Monday to lead the Aztec women's golf team during the opening round of the 2016 Mountain West Championship at Mission Hills Country Club.

With her total, the SDSU sophomore finds herself in a three-way tie for first place on the individual leaderboard with Colorado State's Katrina Prendergast and Guðrun Björgvinsdottir of Fresno State, heading into Tuesday's second round on the par-72, 6,291-yard Dinah Shore Tournament Course.

As a team, the Aztecs posted a collective 8-over 296 to finish the day in second place one stroke behind front-runner UNLV (+7), while Fresno State (+9), New Mexico (+11) and San Jose State (+17) round out the top five.

In addition to her aforementioned rivals, Lacey was one of just three golfers in the field of 45 competitors to shoot below par on Monday, draining a team-high five birdies, including an impressive conversion on the par-4, 402-yard No. 3, which ranked as the most difficult hole of the opening round. The Torrey Pines High alumna also notched a birdie-4 on the 485-yard 18th to forge a share of the lead with a slim one-stroke advantage over UNLV's Alexandra Kaui and Alexandra Moisand of New Mexico, who are knotted in the fourth spot at even-par 72, while five players are tied for sixth at 1-over 73.

Elsewhere, the Aztecs have three starters situated in a six-way logjam for 11th place after each carded a 75, including Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who found herself at 2-under through eight holes with a mix of three birdies, four pars and one bogey. However, the SDSU senior had her momentum short-circuited by a tough stretch of three bogeys and a double on her ensuing five greens before closing with five straight pars.

Despite recording just one birdie on the day at the par-5, 482-yard No. 2, junior Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) managed to ease the sting of four bogeys with a team-high 13 pars, including eight after the turn.

Conversely, sophomore Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) stumbled down the stretch, closing with four bogeys on her final seven holes after making the last of her three birdies of the day at the par-5, 494-yard 11th.

Despite their misfortune, however, Henrikson, Blair and Chaves are just four shots off the pace with two rounds left to play.

The Aztec contingent also included Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.), who completed the first 18 holes in a tie for 30th after shooting a 79 on Monday. The SDSU sophomore finished with two birdies in her initial conference tournament appearance, but was unable to overcome a rash of five bogeys and two doubles.

The Mountain West Championship continues on Tuesday when San Diego State tees off alongside Fresno State and UNLV for the second round, beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1. A live scoring link will be available courtesy of Golfstat on GoAztecs.com.
