LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech completed a three-game sweep of the weekend series against San Diego State with a 7-2 win over the Aztecs Sunday afternoon at Dan Law Field in Lubbock.
The victory was the ninth straight for the No. 10 Red Raiders, who improved to 29-2. SDSU, meanwhile dropped its third consecutive contest to see its record fall to 10-23.
Texas Tech built a 5-0 lead over the first four frames before the Aztecs had recorded a hit. Four of those runs came against SDSU starter Cody Thompson. The junior right-hander would go three innings allowing four runs one eight hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Thompson would be tagged for the loss to drop his season mark to 1-6.
San Diego State got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth. The inning began with a double by Andrew Brown and single by David Hensley, two of the three hits the Aztecs would record on the afternoon.
Brown would score on a RBI ground out by Hunter Stratton with Hensley scoring with the help of a Red Raider error later in the inning to make it a 5-2 contest.
Although they drew seven walks in the game, three by Jordan Verdon, SDSU did not record another hit until a one-out single by Brown in the top of the ninth.
Four Red Raider pitchers combined to limit the Aztecs to the three hits in the contest with reliever Ryan Mosely going the middle 3.1 innings and picking up the win to improve to 4-2.
San Diego State will now return home where it will host UC Irvine on Tuesday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
