SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team will compete in two races this weekend, the final dual events of the season. The Aztecs will face UC San Diego on Friday morning followed by UC Santa Barbara on Saturday. The two competitions will be the final dual races of the season before SDSU heads to the WIRA Championships and finally, the American Athletic Conference Championship.
On Friday morning, the two San Diego schools will begin competition at 7 a.m. on Mission Bay. The first varsity eight crews from both institutions will begin the morning of racing. At 7:10 a.m., San Diego State will send two third varsity eight crews to face UCSD. At 7:20 a.m., the Tritons and Aztecs will face off in the second varsity eight duel. The varsity four crews will compete at 7:30 a.m. followed by the final race of the day between the two novice four boats at 7:40 a.m.
The race course will start at the Sea World Marina and run east toward the I-5. The finish line will be at the blue pavilion in South Shores Park. All spectators can park for free at South Shores Park and have a great sight of the finish line.
On Saturday, the Gauchos and Aztecs will split into four groups and do a series of six 1000-meter races. All the groups will start at 7:45 a.m. in different parts of Mission Bay. The main group of rowers will be made up of both San Diego State and UC Santa Barbara’s first and second eights.
Following the two dual races this weekend, SDSU will head to the WIRA Championships on April 30-May 1. The final scheduled regatta for the Aztecs will come at the American Athletic Conference Championship on May 14.
