SANTA CRUZ, Calif. ââ'¬" The 22nd-ranked San Diego State men's golf team landed in seventh place at the Western Intercollegiate on Wednesday after posting a 16-over-par 366 during the final round at Pasatiempo Golf Course. With their score, the Aztecs finished their first tournament of the season out of the top five, posting a 54-hole total of 25-over 1075 in the six-count-five event.
Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) was SDSU's No. 1 individual finisher, but tumbled eight places into the 15th position at 1-over 211 on the heels of a final-round 73. The Aztec senior drained two birdies on the day, including an impressive make on the par-3, 217-yard No. 3, which ranked as the third-toughest hole on Wednesday. However, three bogeys and a double on the par-4 No. 12 precipitated his drop.
On the other hand, junior Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.) displayed upward mobility on the leaderboard, vaulting 24 places into a tie for 16th, one shot behind Ree at 2-over 212. The SDSU junior offset four bogeys with a team-high six birdies, highlighted by three consecutive conversions on holes 9-11. With his score, the Francis Parker High alumnus completed his Aztec-best 16th round of the year below par and his eighth under 70.
Elsewhere, Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.) and Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy) tied for the 33rd spot at 7-over 217, joining PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii), who was competing as an unattached golfer.
Abercrombie fell 14 places on the ladder after carding a 76. The SDSU sophomore got off to a quick start with three pars and a birdie on his first four holes; however, a quadruple-bogey on the par-4 10th, followed by a bogey-5 on No. 11, proved too much to overcome.
Michelini was also unable to avoid a drop of three places after firing a 74 on Wednesday. The Aztec senior was 2-under for the day following successful birdie putts on the No. 6 and No. 9 greens, but three straight bogeys derailed his momentum. The SDSU captain rebounded with another birdie on the par-5 13th, but two additional bogeys and a double-bogey down the stretch thwarted his rally.
Meanwhile, Samiere enjoyed a steady if unspectacular day, notching a 71, highlighted by birdies at No. 9 and 17 to go with 13 pars, including five straight to end his round.
The Aztecs were also represented by Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) and Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea), who landed in the 49th and 67th positions, respectively.
Song drained three birdies on the afternoon, including a successful conversion at the par-4, 505-yard No. 1, which ranked as the fifth-most difficult hole of the final round. However, the SDSU junior was saddled with a 75, suffering four bogeys and two doubles to finish the week at 11-over 221.
Similarly, Yang struggled over his final 18 holes, shooting an uncharacteristic 80 for a 54-hole total of 16-over 226.
Buoyed by Maverick McNealy's medal-winning effort of 16-under 194, Stanford (-9) captured the team title by 10 strokes over second-place USC (+1), while Oregon (+9), California (+12) and Pepperdine (+15) rounded out the top five.
McNealy fired his second consecutive 64 to edge Oregon's Aaron Wise (-14) for top individual honors, while Corey Pereira of Washington (-3) finished a distant third.
San Diego State will now have nine days to prepare for the Mountain West Championships, scheduled for April 22-24, at OMNI National Resort in Tucson, Ariz.
