SANTA CRUZ, Calif. -
The San Diego State men's golf team wrapped the first day of competition at the Western Intercollegiate by recording a sixth-place first day. The Aztecs shot a combined 4-over-par 354 on Monday during the first round of the tournament at Pasatiempo Golf Club.
The 21st-ranked Aztecs are one shot out of fifth-place California (+3) and 13 out of top spot-owning Oregon (-9) heading into the second round on Tuesday.
Individually, SDSU was led by Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.), who recorded a 2-under 68 to tie for the seventh position on the par-70, 6,615-yard course. Ree was the only San Diego State player come in under par on day one. The Aztec senior saw the good outweigh the bad on day one as he recorded two bogeys and three birdies. With the first day of competition under his belt, Ree finishes five shots within first place.
The next Aztec on the leaderboard was Blake Abercrombie who finished tied for the 21st spot after shooting even-par 70. The Rocklin, Calif., native balanced three bogeys with three birdies to finish even on the day. Abercrombie shares the 21st-place finish on day one with seven other golfers.
SDSU's next three individuals on the leaderboard all finished in the same position, No. 38, after shooting a two-over 72. Nahum Mendoza III, Riccardo Michelini and Gunn Yang all tied for the 38th spot on Monday. Mendoza was even on his first nine holes but stumbled on his final nine. The San Diego native recorded five bogeys and three birdies to finish two over on the day.
Italy's Michelini also found a mixed bag on day one as he carded five bogeys and only two birdies to finish two over. The final Aztec tied for 38th place was Yang (Pyeonchang, South Korea) who shot the first nine with one bogey and one birdie only to find the back nine with three additional bogeys. With only one more birdie to offset, the Aztec finished two over. Rounding out San Diego State's entrants, Brian Song and PJ Samiere landed in a tie for 64th place at five-over 70. Song entered the day with the team delegation while Samiere is competing as an individual.
The Western Intercollegiate will hold its second round on Tuesday. The Aztecs will tee off alongside UC Irvine beginning at 8:45 a.m.
