SAN DIEGO -
The San Diego State women's tennis team opened conference play on Friday with a tough 4-3 loss. The Aztecs fell behind early after dropping the doubles point and saw their rally in singles play fall short. SDSU drops to 6-12 overall and 0-1 in Mountain West action.
The day got underway with doubles action where Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz de Regules took the advantage by defeating Monika Magusiak and Sara Korzeniecki in the third position, 6-2. The Wolf Pack evened the score as Adriana Gergelyova and Claudia Herrero topped Tami Nguyen and Taylor Lederman in the second spot, 6-4. The point-deciding match came in the top spot where Jana Buth and Isabelle Hoorn fell to Blaga Delic and Shelia Morales, 6-3.
With a one-point disadvantage, SDSU needed a rally in singles play to contend for the win. On court No. 6, Lederman put the Aztecs on the board as she handled Delaney Phanco, 6-2, 6-0. In the third position, Gergelyova put the Wolf Pack ahead once again as she defeated Diaz, 6-4, 6-4. In second singles, Morales brought Nevada within one point of victory as she topped Nguyen, 7-6 (3), 6-4. In the fourth spot, Davis gave life to San Diego State as she battled back after dropping her first set to ultimately defeat Delic, 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-0. In the top spot, Buth and Herrero fought for the point that would eventually decide the match. Despite taking the first set and taking the second into extras, Buth would fall to Herrero, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3. Court No. 5 saw SDSU's final point as Hoorn topped Magusiak, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
San Diego State will resume action and conference play on Sunday when it faces San Jose State. First serve is set for noon at Aztec Tennis Center.
