MARINA DEL REY, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team traveled north on Saturday to face UCLA. The Aztecs finished behind the Bruins in each of the four races despite holding an early lead in the varsity eight race. SDSU will take a break from competition for two weeks before resuming racing on March 19.
The first duel of the day came in the third eight race with UCLA crossing the finish line first with a time of 6 minutes, 47.75 seconds. San Diego State finished behind with a time of 6:59.56.
In the varsity four showdown SDSU finished behind the two Bruins' crews. The UCLA `A' boat clocked a time of 6:59.66 to take first while the UCLA `B' boat recorded a time of 7:10.34. The Aztecs crossed exactly one minute behind (7:59.66) the first-place finishers.
The second eight race saw the Bruins record a time of 6:21.54 to finish first. Just behind was the Aztec crew with a time of 6:42.53.
In the final and premier race of the day, SDSU held an early lead but could not close out the race. UCLA rallied and finished first with a time of 6:15.91 while San Diego State clocked 6:20.78.
"Today was a good day of racing," said head coach Bill Zack. "The first eight grabbed an early lead and led to the 1250-meter mark but couldn't hold off UCLA's comeback. Today was definitely an improvement over last week. UCLA, as always, were gracious hosts and they helped to bring the best out of our team today. We have two weeks now to get ready for the first conference competition against Sacramento State and a quality Saint Mary's and Alabama crew."
The Aztecs will get back in action on March 19 when they travel to compete in the Sacramento State triple dual.
