SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Fresno State built a 6-1 lead after seven innings with the help of five unearned runs as it defeated San Diego State, 10-5, Saturday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The victory kept the Bulldogs undefeated as they improved to 11-0 overall and 2-0 in Mountain West play. SDSU, meanwhile lost for the seventh straight outing to fall to 1-10 (0-2 MW).
Junior right-hander Adrian Orozco got a rare start on the mound and responded by retiring the first eight batters he faced over the first three innings. But after conceding a two-out triple in the top of the third, he was lifted in favor of lefty Marcus Reyes, who got the third out of the inning with no damage done.
The next frame, however, was a different story as the Bulldogs rallied to score four runs on four hits with a costly two-out error prolonging the inning after it should have ended with one run scored.
The Aztecs got on the board with a lone run in the bottom of the sixth when Alan Trejo led off with a single and scored on an RBI double to left by Chase Calabuig. Calabuig would end the day with three hits in four trips to the plate to lead the SDSU offense. Trejo was the only other Aztec to tally more than one hit as he finished with a pair of singles, an RBI and run scored.
Trailing by just three runs at 4-1, Reyes was victimized in the top of the next inning when a pair of SDSU errors led to Fresno State adding two runs to its total to make it 6-1. Reyes would end the day having tossed 5.1 innings allowing eight runs (five unearned) on nine hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He would take the loss to fall to 0-2.
The Bulldogs added a run in the eighth on a solo home run and put the game away in the top of the ninth, scoring three times on a triple, walk, single and double to go up 10-1.
San Diego State finally got its offense going in its final at bat, but it was too little too late as it scored four times on three hits, a walk, hit batter and Bulldog error. Those runs came against Fresno State pitcher Brennon Williams, who was on it place of starter Jimmy Lambert.
Lambert went the first seven innings surrendering a lone run on five hits while walking none and striking out nine. With the victory he improved to 3-0 on the year.
The Aztecs and Bulldogs will wrap up their weekend series Sunday afternoon (March 6) when they square off at 1:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
