Complete Release and Season Statistics
WHAT'S ON TAP THIS WEEK IN AZTEC BASEBALL
Following Tuesday night's 3-2 loss to UC Riverside in 10 innings, San Diego State will resume league play this weekend when it hosts a three-game series vs. New Mexico. That set gets underway on Thursday, March 24, with a contest scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. (MT) at Tony Gwynn stadium. The Aztecs and Lobos will also hook up for games on Friday (March 25) and Saturday (March 26) at 6:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. respectively. The series is being played Thursday through Sunday due to Easter falling next Sunday.
ON THE AIR
All three games vs. New Mexico will had live video streaming on The Mountain Digital Network. Links to those broadcasts are available at the SDSU web site (GoAztecs.com). In addition, there will be a Live Stats feed for all three games vs. the Lobos at GoAztecs.com.
SERIES RECORD
San Diego State's record against New Mexico stands at 108-71. The Lobos are one of three teams against which SDSU has recorded 100 wins. The others are Air Force (100-22) and Utah (102-34). Last season each team won two of three regular-season games on its home field. The Aztecs also defeated the Lobos twice at the 2015 Mountain West Tournament including the championship contest. San Diego State has a record of 66-30 vs. UNM in San Diego, 33-37 in Albuquerque and 9-4 on neutral fields.
AIR FORCE SERIES
Due to snow, only one game of last weekend's three-game series at Air Force was completed, that being the first game of a doubleheader on Sunday (March 20). The second game of that twin bill was suspended in the top of the eighth inning and will be completed when the Falcons come to San Diego in May. Stats for that second contest are not reflected in SDSU's current statistics.
ADKISON HITS AWAY
Sophomore Tyler Adkison hit a pair of home runs in the contest at Air Force on Sunday to take the team lead with three this season. In that contest he went 3-for-5 with three RBI and three runs scored. In the series vs. Northwestern the previous weekend, he went 5-for-8 (.625) three RBI and six runs scored (two in each game). He also hit his first home run of the year and recorded a double.
NEVAREZ ON A ROLL
Freshman Dean Nevarez continues to excel in the designated hitter role for the Aztecs. He had a seven-game hitting streak stopped last Tuesday (March 15) at Cal State Fullerton during which he went 12-for-30 (.360) with two doubles, a triple, home run, eight RBI and five runs scored. Nevarez has scored a run in five of the past seven contests. In last weekend's series vs. Northwestern he hit .400 (6-for-15) with six RBI. He has made 10 starts, all as the designated hitter.
TREJO STREAKING
Shortstop Alan Trejo is on a 14-game hitting streak during which he is batting .419 (26-for-62) with two doubles, 11 RBI and 12 runs scored. He has been in double figures in hits in eight of SDSU's last 10 contests. He leads the Aztecs with 30 hits on the season. Only one other player has as many as 21. The only contest in which he did not record a hit this season was on Feb. 23 at UC Irvine.
VERDON HEATS UP
Freshman Jordan Verdon is riding the team's second-longest current hitting streak at nine games. During the streak he is hitting .379 (11-for-29) with a double, triple, three RBI and five runs scored. Verdon leads the team in being hit by pitch this season with six. His .403 on-base percentage ranks second on the squad. Verdon is one of only two Aztecs to have recorded a double, triple and home run this season. (Dean Nevarez is the other.)
WYLIE GOES DEEP
Second baseman Justin Wylie hit a leadoff home run in the contest at Cal State Fullerton last Tuesday (March 15) to give SDSU an early 1-0 lead. On Tuesday vs. UC Riverside he recorded his team-leading fourth double. Wylie leads the Aztecs with 15 RBI. He is currently on a seven-game hitting streak during which he is batting .321 (9-for-28) with two doubles, 10 RBI and eight runs scored. He has scored six and driven in five runs in the past three contests. Wylie has hit safely in 10 of SDSU's last 11 games and has recorded at least one RBI in five of the last seven contests.
PYATT CONSISTENT
Redshirt freshman Harrison Pyatt turned in his third straight impressive start of the season vs. Northwestern on Thursday, March 10. In that contest he tossed 6.2 innings allowing a run on a seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts. In his previous start vs. San Diego, he went six innings giving up no runs on one hit with three walks and seven strikeouts. Pyatt made his Aztec debut with the start at UC Irvine on Tuesday, Feb. 23. He pitched five innings allowing one run on just three hits while striking out four.
STREAKS
Alan Trejo has the team's longest current hitting streak at 14 games. The next best current streak of nine games belongs to Jordan Verdon while Justin Wylie has a seven-game streak in progress. Trejo has reached base safely (via hit, walk or hit by pitch) in all 18 games this season while Verdon has done so in the past 10 contests. Trejo also leads the Aztecs with 10 multiple-hit contests and four multiple-RBI games.
AZTEC NOTES
Junior relief pitcher Jacob Erickson has not issued a walk (while striking out 11) in his nine appearances covering 11.2 innings ,,, Senior outfielder Spencer Thornton had his first three-hit game of the season in the contest at Air Force on Sunday (March 20). In that game he had a pair of doubles, two RBI and three runs scored … David Hensley went 5-for-10 over the three games vs. Northwestern (March 10-12) and scored a run in each of those contests … Freshman right-hander Chris Collins has made five relief appearances out of the bullpen and allowed one earned run over 6.1 innings pitched for a 1.42 earned run average … Shortstop Alan Trejo is the only two players to have started all 18 games this season at the same position … Two other Aztec have started all 18 games, but not at the same position each time: Chase Calabuig (CF-RF) and Justin Wylie (2B-3B-DH).
UP NEXT
Following the New Mexico series, San Diego State will travel to Corvallis, Ore., for a pair of games against No. 3 Oregon State. Those contests are scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, March 28-29, at 6:00 p.m. (PT). From there the Aztecs will fly to Reno for a three-game Mountain West series vs. Nevada that gets underway on Friday, April 1, at 6:00 p.m.
