RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. -- The 17th-ranked San Diego State women's golf team completed another stirring comeback on Tuesday after rallying past No. 79 Kansas in the third round of the SDSU March Mayhem match-play tournament at The Farms Golf Club. Each team pocketed two individual victories; however, the Aztecs prevailed on a tiebreaker, posting a greater combined winning margin (6-5) than the Jayhawks.
With its triumph, SDSU will square off against Arizona State for fifth place on Wednesday, starting at 7:45 a.m. on hole No. 1. The Sun Devils were 3-1 winners over Oregon in their third-round clash on the par-72, 6,211-yard layout.
Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) was the first player off the course for the Aztecs after dispatching Victoria Chandra by a 5&4 count. The SDSU sophomore faced an early deficit after logging back-to-back bogeys on the second and third greens, but quickly took control of the match courtesy of three birdies over a four-hole stretch, while Chandra carded three pars and a triple bogey-7. Moments later, the Torrey Pines alumna moved to 4-up after her KU adversary made bogey on the par-5 12th before sinking another crucial birdie putt on No. 15 to secure the victory.
In addition, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) found herself three holes down in her match before battling back to claim a 1-up decision over Yupaporn Kawinpakorn. The Aztec junior recorded three pars and two birdies on Nos. 5-8 to vault in front by two, while her Jayhawk opponent notched three bogeys and two pars over the same span. However, Blair was unable to sustain the momentum after dropping the 10th and 13th holes thanks to a pair of untimely bogeys. Unfazed, the two-time all-Mountain West selection finished strong with four pars to go with a birdie at No. 18. Kawinpakorn also birdied the final hole after misfiring on an eagle attempt, but a costly bogey on the 16th green allowed Blair to escape.
Emma Henrikson's (Malmö, Sweden) encounter was no less dramatic, as the SDSU senior came out all square against Lizzie Winyarat in the final pairing of the match. The All-America candidate was two holes down on the heels of a bogey on the 12th hole, before unleashing a flurry of six straight pars. However, Winyarat was unable to capitalize on her Aztec counterpart's misfortune at No. 12 and subsequently made two bogeys of her own on the 13th and 16th, allowing Henrikson to close the gap. On the 18th green, Henrikson overcame an errant wedge shot with a short downhill putt to halve the score and give SDSU the team victory.
Earlier, Haleigh Krause (Eugene, Ore.) almost pulled off her own dramatic comeback before falling short to Ariadna Fonseca, who emerged with a 1-up decision. The Aztec sophomore trailed by as many six holes, but picked herself off the mat with three straight birdies on Nos. 9-11, while her KU foe went par-par-par. Krause pulled to within one after Fonseca bogeyed the 17th; however, the Jayhawks claimed the match after the two golfers made par at No. 18.
KU's other point was earned when Pornvipa Sakdee emerged triumphant over sophomore Mila Chaves (Asuncion, Paraguay) by a 4-up margin. Chaves sank three birdies on the day, but six bogeys proved too much to overcome.
The SDSU March Mayhem, which features 10 schools ranked in the Golfstat top 10, will conclude on Wednesday with a full complement of championship and consolation matches. Second-ranked USC will face No. 9 Arizona in the title clash, while sixth-ranked UCLA will battle No. 11 Stanford for third place. Live results courtesy of BirdieFire are available on GoAztecs.com.
