Redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) hit a two-out, grand slam in the bottom of the fourth inning to propel the San Diego State softball team a 5-1 victory over Cal Poly and Saturday sweep at the San Diego Classic II in Santee, Calif. The Aztecs (17-10), who defeated Princeton, 9-3, earlier in the day, have won all four games in the tournament.

With the game scoreless after three innings, SDSU loaded the bases in the fourth when freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) reached on a fielder's choice, junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) on a fielding error and junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) when she was hit by a pitch. Byrd, who was hitless over her previous 11 at-bats, took the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for her first career home run in front of her hometown.

The Mustangs (16-7) got one back on the top of the fifth when McKenna Young, who reached on a throwing error, scored on a fielder's choice grounder by Courtney Tyler. With runners on first and third, San Diego State sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) then struck out CP's cleanup hitter Sierra Hyland on four pitches to end the threat.

The Aztecs got that run back in the sixth as Orlando's fielder's choice grounder plated sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.). Peres had led off with a single, stole second base and moved to third on a groundout by Sturdivant. SDSU loaded the bases again with just one out, but Hyland replaced starting pitcher Lindsey Chalmers and got out of the jam by recording a strikeout and a fielder's choice grounder.

Formby allowed a one-out single in the sixth, but induced a pair of groundouts to pick up her second save of the season.

Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) picked up the win after yielding one unearned run on five hits and a walk over 4 1/3 innings, while striking out three. The right-hander improved to 9-4 on the season.

Byrd finished with two hits, four RBIs and a run, while Peres had two hits and a run. Cable, the school's all-time leader in times hit by pitch, was hit twice in the game.

Down, 2-1, in the first game, San Diego State scored five times in the top of the fourth inning and never looked back en route to a 9-3 win over the Tigers (3-16). The Aztecs tacked on two scores in the fifth and an insurance run in the sixth.

SDSU banged out 14 hits, including five doubles by five different players, and used freshman Julie McDonald's (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) first career complete game in th win.

Cable (2 RBI, R, 2B) and sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) (RBI, R) each had three hits to pace the San Diego State offense, while senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) had two hits, three RBIs, two runs and a double. Sturdivant also had a good game at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, double and two runs.

McDonald (2-1) got the win after allowing three runs (two earned) on 10 hits and a walk over seven innings, while striking out two.

The Aztecs wrap up the weekend with a 2 p.m. PT Sunday game against UC Santa Barbara.
