SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State rowing team competed in the first two of three dual races on Saturday. The Aztecs topped the Hornets in both the varsity four race and varsity eight races while they split the two Sacramento State boats in the third varsity eight event and finished behind the hosting Hornets in the second varsity eight race. The Aztecs went on to sweep all races over Saint Mary's later in the afternoon.
The competition got underway at 8 a.m. with the varsity eight showdown. The race of the two top boats proved to be a tight one. San Diego State claimed the top spot with a time of 6 minutes, 24.6 seconds. The Hornets finished behind with a time of 6:27.4.
The second race of the morning came in the second varsity eight matchup at 9 a.m. Sacramento State (6:39.7) came out ahead of SDSU (6:46.1). This results would be the last time that the Aztecs would cross the finish line last for the morning's outing.
At 10 a.m. the varsity four crews took to the water. The San Diego State crew was able to top the Hornets. The Aztecs clocked a time of 7:22.2 while Sacramento State posted a time of 7:24.9.
The final race of the morning came at 11 a.m. with the third varsity eight boats squaring off. The Sacramento State `B' crew finished first with a time of 7:13.2. Just behind was the SDSU crew with a time of 7:17.1. The Hornet `A' boat posted a time of 7:39.6.
San Diego State got back on the water to take on Saint Mary's. At 3:45 p.m. the varsity eight duel got underway. SDSU made a statement and finished over 10 seconds ahead of the Gael crew. The Aztecs posted a time of 6:47.7 followed by Saint Mary's with a time of 6:57.9.
The second eights took to the water at 4:15 p.m. and once again, SDSU came out on top. San Diego State clocked a time of 7:03.6 followed by Saint Mary's with a time of 7:12.2.
The varsity four crews faced off at 4:45 p.m. with the Aztecs recording the largest margin of victory of the day. San Diego State posted a time of 7:42.3 while the Gaels notched a time of 8:21.1.
The final race of the day saw the same result as many of the earlier races with SDSU taking the top spot. The Aztecs recorded a time of 7:18.9 followed by Saint Mary's with a time of 7:38.4.
San Diego State will race again tomorrow morning at 8:20 a.m. when it will face Alabama before returning to San Diego.
