SAN DIEGO - The No. 75 San Diego State men's tennis team fell to No. 49 Harvard, 4-1, in the final day of the Hilton San Diego Mission Valley Spring Classic Saturday at Aztec Tennis Center.
In doubles play, Santiago Cevallos and Milen Ianakiev defeated Sebastian Beltrame and Jean Thirouin, 6-4, to give the Aztecs a chance for the doubles point after Sander Gjoels-Andersen and Jonas Meinzer earlier fell to Christopher Morrow and Andy Zhou by a 6-0 score. Freddy Gelbric and Hendrik Jebens, however, lost a hard-fought battle to Nicky Hu and Brian Yeung, 7-5, giving the Crimson the doubles point.
Hendrick Jebens got SDSU's first point, downing Sebastian Beltrame, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles after Cornelius Kolb fell to Andy Zhou, 6-2, 6-1 at fifth singles.
Harvard would add two more points in close matches at the No. 3 and No. 4 spot. At No. 3, San Diego State's Milen Ianakiev dropped a 6-4, 2-6, 4-6, decision to Kenny Tao. Sander Gjoels-Andersen was also edged at fourth singles to Brian Yeung by a 7-6 (5), 6-4 margin, securing the win for the Crimson.
With the overall match wrapped up, the Aztecs' Freddy Gelbrich and Harvard's Nicky Hu were in a heated battle at the No. 1 spot. Gelbrich, the nation's 100th-ranked player, defeated Hu, No. 122 in the country, 6-4 in the first set and was down 6-7 (2) in the second set. A similar result happened at sixth singles, where Jonas Meinzer lost, 6-4, in the first set to Christopher Morrow, but was leading, 7-6 (4) before the match was called.
SDSU kicks off Mountain West action next Sunday at Fresno State.
