SANTEE, Calif. -
Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) drew a two-out, bases loaded walk in the bottom of the sixth inning the help the San Diego State softball team defeat Brigham Young, 3-2, Friday night at the Sportsplex USA Santee in Santee, Calif. The Aztecs improved to 15-10 on the season, while the Cougars, who doubled up Mountain West preseason favorite Fresno State, 6-3, earlier in the day, dropped to 17-12.
SDSU loaded the bases in the decisive inning with no outs when freshman Molly Sturdivant (Orange, Calif.) doubled, junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) singled and junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) walked. BYU reliever McKenna Bull almost got out of the jam by getting San Diego State out on a fielder's choice grounder and a strikeout, but Camello's five-pitch walk plated freshman pinch runner Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.) with the winning run.
Lauren Bell led off the top of the seventh with an infield single, but sophomore Aztec pitcher Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) got Brigham Young's 2-3-4 hitters out on a pair of flyouts and a strikeout to clinch the win.
Down, 1-0, SDSU took the lead in the fourth on a solo home run by sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) and an infield single by junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino Calif.) that plated Sturdivant.
The Cougars tied it in the fifth on an RBI groundout before San Diego State took the lead for good in the sixth.
The Aztecs had five hits and five walks in the game with Ignacio (single, walk) and redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) (two walks) each reaching base twice safely.
Formby (5-4) got the win after tossing three scoreless innings of relief, allowing three hits and a walk, while striking out two. Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) started the game and allowed two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings, striking out two.
SDSU plays Princeton (4:30 p.m. PT) and Cal Poly (7 p.m. PT) on Saturday night.
