Aztecs to Play Six Games this Weekend, Including Five at San Diego Classic II
The San Diego State softball team wraps up its non-conference play with a busy week, highlighted by the 16-team, 39-game San Diego Classic II at SDSU Softball Stadium and Sportsplex USA Santee.
The Aztecs (13-9) kick off the week with a single game against Ohio State at 6 p.m. PST Wednesday at SDSU Softball Stadium. SDSU then plays host to four games on Thursday, including its 6 p.m. PST contest vs. Harvard. The rest of the tournament will be contested at Sportsplex USA Santee with San Diego State playing Brigham Young at 7 p.m. PST Friday, Princeton (4:30 p.m. PST) and Cal Poly (7 p.m. PST) on Saturday, and UC Santa Barbara at 2 p.m. PST Sunday.
The Aztecs are led offensively by sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.). Peres leads SDSU in batting average (.444), runs (15, tied), home runs (5), slugging percentage (.944) on on-base percentage (.545), while driving in 13 runs in just 13 games. Sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) is batting .400 with a team-high nine stolen bases and a team-high-tying 15 runs. Redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) is hitting .362 with a team-best 15 RBIs, while senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) (.325, 12 R) and junior Sam Vlot (Chowchilla, Calif.) (.310) are also above the .300 mark for SDSU.
San Diego State has used four pitchers on the season with junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) pitching the most, going 7-4 with a 3.37 ERA, a save and 51 strikeouts over 62 1/3 innings. Junior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif./Poway HS) (1-1, 2.85 ERA, 19.2 IP), freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (1-1, 2.89 ERA, 26.2 IP) and sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (4-3, 3.82 ERA, 1 SV, 33.0 IP) have also logged at least 19 innings apiece.
