FULLERTON, Calif. - Cal State Fullerton came storming back from an early one-run deficit to defeat San Diego State, 8-1, Tuesday evening at Goodwin Field in Fullerton. With the win, the Titans improved to 10-6 on the season while the Aztecs saw their record fall to 4-12.
SDSU stunned the Titans early when second baseman Justin Wylie opened the game with a solo home run to left center to stake SDSU to a quick 1-0 lead. It was Wylie's second round tripper in two games and upped his team-leading RBI total to 14.
Cal State Fullerton, however, took little time to respond as it struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against Aztec starter Marcus Reyes. Those markers came courtesy of a double, single, sacrifice fly, wild pitch and ground out.
It remained a one-run contest until the Titans added to their lead with a run in the fourth and took control of the contest with three more in the next frame. The home side's first six runs were charged to Reyes, who went four innings allowing eight hits while walking three and striking out three. He was charged with the loss to fall to 0-3.
Following Wylie's homer, the Aztecs managed only three singles and a walk against a total for four Titan pitchers. They did not have more than one runner on base in any inning and none of them made it beyond first base.
Fullerton starter John Gavin settled in after giving up the quick home run as he tossed six innings surrendering only two more hits and a walk while striking out eight. His effort earned him the victory as he evened his record at 1-1.
Four different Aztec had hits in the contest. One of those was shortstop Alan Trejo, whose single in the fourth inning extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
San Diego State will now return to Mountain West action as it travels for a three-game series against league leader Air Force this weekend. That set gets underway on Friday, March 18, with a contest scheduled to get underway at 3:00 p.m. (MT) at Falcon Field in Colorado Springs, Colo.
