SAN DIEGO -
A week away from competition proved to be just what the San Diego State women's tennis team deemed necessary as the Aztecs upset No. 48 Minnesota on Monday. SDSU returned to the courts for the first time since March 5 and the break provided the Aztecs with their first back to back wins on the season. San Diego State defeated the Gophers, 5-2, at Aztec Tennis Center.
A refreshed SDSU came out of the gates ready to roll and did just that. In the top spot, Isabelle Hoorn and Jana Buth combined to take down Paula Rincon-Otero and AnneMarie Emme, 6-3. In third doubles, Taylor Lederman and Tami Nguyen dismissed Mehvish Safdar and Caitlyn Merzbacher, 6-3, to claim the point. The match on court No. 2 between Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz de Regules and Caroline Ryba and Julia Courter was left unfinished.
In singles play, Nguyen gave the Aztecs their second point on the day as she handled Courter in the second spot, 6-2, 7-5. On court No. 2, 120th-ranked Ryba gave Minnesota life as she defeated Buth, 6-3, 6-2. The sixth position saw San Diego State come within a point of victory as Lederman defeated Camila Vargas Gomez, 6-2, 7-5. In the fifth spot, Hoorn clinched the victory for SDSU as she finished off Emme, 7-5, 6-4. Court No. 4 saw Diaz top Jessika Mozia, 7-6 (1), 7-5. In the third spot, Rincon-Otero gave the Gophers their second point of the day as she defeated Davis in a three-set battle, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3.
With the victory, San Diego State moves up to 5-9 on the season. SDSU will next face Dartmouth on Sat., March 19 with first serve set for noon at Aztec Tennis Center.
