CHULA VISTA, Calif. -- The San Diego State men's golf team finds itself in fourth place after firing a combined 4-over par 580 on Monday during the opening two rounds of the Lamkin San Diego Classic at the par-72, 7,033-yard San Diego Country Club.
The 21st-ranked Aztecs posted scores of 286 and 294 over the first 36 holes to remain four shots in back of third-place New Mexico (E), while Texas (-2) and Arizona State (-2) own a share of the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Individually, SDSU was led by Nahum Mendoza III (San Diego, Calif.), who landed in a tie for third after carding a 2-under 142 on rounds of 70-72. The Aztec junior paced the squad with nine birdies overall, including his penultimate green of the morning session, the par-4, 460-yard No. 18, which ranked as the toughest hole of the tournament's opening day.
With his total, Mendoza shares the third spot on a crowded leaderboard with Taylor Funk of Texas just two strokes off the pace, while another Longhorn golfer, No. 1-ranked Beau Hossler (-5), grabbed a slim two-shot advantage over Middle Tennessee State's Hoyeong Kim (-3).
Joining Mendoza in the individual top 20 are seniors Ryann Ree (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Riccardo Michelini (Carpi, Italy). Ree occupies the 12th position at 1-over 145 after recording a 72 and 73 on Monday. Despite notching just two birdies against three birdies round two, the Redondo Beach native still managed to climb three places on the ladder.
Michelini was not as fortunate, however, slipping 15 places into a tie for 17th at 3-over 147. The SDSU captain catapulted to the No. 2 spot on the leaderboard after carding a team-low 69 during the opening round, highlighted by six birdies, including three straight on holes 15-17. However, the native Italian was unable to maintain the frenetic pace, settling for a 78 in the afternoon as four bogeys and two double-bogeys sandbagged his round.
Elsewhere, Gunn Yang (Pyeongchang, South Korea) remains one shot in back of Michelini in a tie for 23rd after firing a 4-over 148. The Aztec sophomore was the lone Scarlet and Black starter to lower his score in round two, posting a 73 on the heels of a 75. Yang was plagued by five bogeys on the front nine of the opening round, but rebounded after the turn with five pars as well as three straight birdies on holes 15-17. He also sank three additional birdies in the afternoon to ease the sting of four bogeys.
Meanwhile, the Aztecs' fifth starter sophomore PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) ended the day in a tie for 39th after logging a 7-under 151 (75-76). Samiere netted three birdies in each round, but a pair of triple-bogeys, one on the 18th in the morning and another at No. 9 in the afternoon, stymied his progress.
San Diego State also has a group of five players competing as unattached golfers at the ninth annual event, featuring Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.), who finds himself tied for 15th at 2-over 146 on rounds of 74-72. The Aztec junior finished the afternoon with a rush, draining four straight birdies, highlighted by a successful make on the par-4, 397-yard No. 15, which ranked as the third-most difficult hole of the second round.
Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain) remains one shot in back of Song at 3-over 147 after carding rounds of 70-77. The SDSU sophomore vaulted into a tie for sixth in the morning on the strength of six birdies and an eagle on the par-4 17th. However, three bogeys and a quadruple-bogey 8 on his finishing hole prevented a loftier perch. Stung, Matesanz tumbled 11 places into a tie for 17th in round two after notching just two birdies against six bogeys.
Rounding out the Scarlet and Black delegation was sophomore Blake Abercrombie (Rocklin, Calif.), who landed in a tie for 46th at 8-over 152 (77-75), followed by senior Michael Koeneke (San Diego, Calif.), who shot a 13-over 157 (77-80) to complete the opening day in a tie for 71st, and freshman Otto Vanhatalo (Espoo, Finland), who wound up in the 75th position at 14-over 158 (77-81).
The Lamkin San Diego Classic concludes on Tuesday when the Aztecs tee off alongside Middle Tennessee State and Cal State San Marcos for the final round, beginning at 8:45 a.m. PT. Admission is free to the public.
