FRESNO, Calif. -

Weber State 5, SDSU 4

Aubrey Whitmer hit a two-out, walk-off, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Weber State a 5-4 victory over the San Diego State softball team on the final day of the Fresno State Classic Sunday in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs dipped to 13-9 with the loss, while the Wildcats improved to 13-8.

The two teams, who both made the NCAA tournament a year ago, ended up splitting on the season as SDSU beat WSU, 2-1, back on Feb. 13 in Fullerton, Calif.

San Diego State got on the scoreboard first in the top of the third inning when sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) singled, stole second and scored on a single by senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.).

Weber State answered in the bottom half of the third, scoring twice with two outs on a double and a single.

The Aztecs tied it up in the fourth as freshman Aris Metcalfe (Compton, Calif.) scored on a groundout by junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.).

SDSU took a 4-2 lead in the sixth with redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) scoring on an error and freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) on an illegal pitch.

It appeared San Diego State was going to get the win after junior right-hander Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) quickly got two ous on a foulout and a groundout. Sadie Blacker, however, reached on a pinch-hit single and Alyson Kulp followed with a single up the middle to keep the inning alive. Aubrey Whitmer then ended the game with a home run to give the Wildcats the 5-4 win.

Sturdivant was 2-for-2 with a run and a walk to pace the Aztec offense. Byrd had two hits, including a double, and scored a run, while Camello had two hits and an RBI.

Romero (7-4) took the loss after allowing three runs on four hits over 2 2/3 innings, striking out one. Junior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif.) earned the start and yielded two runs on seven hits over 2 2/3 innings, while striking out two. Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) tossed the middle 1 1/3 innings, just allowing one hit.

The Aztecs plays host to Ohio State at 6 p.m. PST Wednesday at SDSU Softball Stadium.
