FRESNO, Calif. -

No. 8/7 WASHINGTON 8, SDSU 0 (5 INN.)

The San Diego State softball team dropped an 8-0 decision to No. 8/7 Washington in five innings Saturday at the Fresno State Classic in Fresno, Calif. The Aztecs fell to 13-8 with the loss, while the Huskies improved to 17-3 with the victory.

UW scored two in the top of the first inning, two in the third and four in the eighth to complete the run-rule win. It was the first time this season that SDSU has been run-ruled. San Diego State is now 2-2 against nationally ranked teams and 2-1 vs. the Pac-12 Conference.

San Diego State had three hits in the game, including singles by redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) and sophomore Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) in the bottom of the second, giving the Aztecs a pair of runners with one out. Washington got out of the jam, however, by getting freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) to ground into a fielder's choice to third base and senior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) to ground out to the second baseman to end the threat.

Junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) doubled to lead off the third, but was left stranded as the Aztecs went strikeout, flyout, strikeout to end the inning. It was the last time SDSU would have a runner on the base in the shortened game.

Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) took the loss for San Diego State after surrendering four runs on six hits and a walk over 2 1/3 innings, striking out one. Sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and three walks, while striking out one.

The Aztecs wrap up their play in the Fresno State Classic at 9 a.m. PST Sunday against Weber State.
