Aztec Softball Heads to Fresno Classic for Final Road Tournament of Season
The San Diego State softball team wraps up its non-conference road slate this weekend at the Fresno State Classic in Fresno, Calif.
The Aztecs (12-7) are slated to play CSU Bakersfield (9:30 a.m. PST) and Weber State (12 p.m. PST) on Friday, No. 8/7 Washington at 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday and CSU Bakersfield again at 11:30 a.m. PST Sunday.
The five teams will combine to play 12 games at Margie Wright Diamond with five set for Friday, four on Saturday and three on Sunday. The biggest competition for SDSU, however, could be Mother Nature. According to WunderGround, there's an 80 percent chance of rain on Friday and a 70 percent chance on Sunday.
San Diego State is hitting a Mountain West-best .307 on the season with eight home runs and 97 runs through 19 games (5.11 runs per game). Despite missing nine games due to injury, sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) leads the Aztecs in batting average (.536), runs (15), home runs (5), slugging percentage (1.179) and on-base percentage (.629). Sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) is hitting .419 with 12 runs and seven stolen bases, while redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) is batting .350 with a team-high 15 RBIs. Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) (.339, 12 R, 4 2B, 2 3B), junior Sam Vlot (Chowchilla, Calif.) (.333) and junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) (.321, 3 HR, 12 RBI) are also hitting over .300 for SDSU.
Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) paces the pitching staff with a 7-2 record, 2.91 ERA and 47 strikeouts over 55 1/3 innings. Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (1-1, 3.04 ERA, 25.1 IP) and sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) (3-3, 3.59 ERA, 25.1 IP) have also logged more than 17 innings in the circle for San Diego State.
