SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men’s basketball team earned the top seed at this week’s 2016 Mountain West Championship at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Aztecs will begin tournament action on Thursday at noon PT vs. the winner of eighth-seeded Wyoming and the ninth seed, Utah State. The quarterfinal game will air on CBS Sports Network.
The Cowboys and Aggies will play for the right to face the Mountain West regular-season champions on Wednesday at 11 a.m. PT on the MW Network. Other Wednesday games include No. 7 UNLV vs. No. 10 Air Force at 1:30 p.m. PT and No. 6 Colorado State and No. 11 San José State at 4 p.m. PT. Both will air on the Mountain West Network.
The rest of the field, along with SDSU, will play on Thursday. No. 4 New Mexico and No. 5 Nevada will play at 2:30 p.m. PT, No. 2 Fresno State will face the winner of UNLV/Air Force at 6 p.m. PT, and No. 3 Boise State will play the winner of CSU/SJSU at 8:30 p.m. PT. All Thursday games will be televised by CBS Sports Network.
Should SDSU advance past the quarterfinal round, it would play the UNM/NEV winner on Friday at 6 p.m. PT on CBS Sports Network. The championship game is set for 3 p.m. PT on Saturday on CBS.
The Aztecs are the No. 1 seed for the first time since 2014 and for fourth time in the history of the Mountain West Championship. SDSU is 7-2 all-time as the field’s top-seeded squad and will be looking for its first tourney title since 2011 despite reaching the final three times in the last four years and six times in the last seven seasons.
