San Diego State Softball Set for No. 11/9 Texas A&M, San Diego Classic I
The San Diego State softball team continues its tough non-conference schedule this weekend when it co-hosts the San Diego Classic I, highlighted by a 7 p.m. PT Friday game against No. 11/9 Texas A&M.
The Aztecs (10-5) also play host to UIC (4:30 p.m. PT) and Saint Joseph's (7 p.m. PT) on Saturday, and Portland State at 3 p.m. PT Sunday.
Also in the field of the three-day, 25-game San Diego Classic I, which will be held at SDSU Softball Stadium and USD Softball Complex, are Boston Univ., Grand Canyon, Pittsburgh and Utah Valley.
SDSU is coming off a 3-2 weekend at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in the Palm Springs area, with both of its losses coming against teams that made last year's NCAA tournament by a combined three runs.
San Diego State is hitting .313 on the season with seven home runs and 80 runs through 15 games. Despite missing nine games due to injury, sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) leads the Aztecs in batting average (.625), runs (12), home runs (4), slugging percentage (1.500) and on-base percentage (.714). Sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.) is hitting .481 with nine runs and six stolen bases, while redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) is batting .393 with a team-high 13 RBIs. Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) (.353, 9 R, 4 2B, 2 3B) and junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) (.333, 3 HR, 10 RBI) are also hitting at least .333 for SDSU.
Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) leads the pitching staff in wins (6), appearances (12), complete games (2), innings pitched (41.2) and strikeouts (33), while freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) tops the squad with a 2.86 ERA over 22 innings.
