COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State softball player Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Player of the Week, the league announced today. It is the second career weekly accolade for the sophomore catcher.
Peres returned from a nine-game injury by batting .571 (8-for-14) with three home runs, eight RBIs, nine runs, a triple, four walks (one intentional) and a stolen base as the Aztecs (10-5) went 3-2 last weekend at the competitive Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. She also posted a .667 on-base percentage and a 1.347 slugging mark.
Peres began her week on Thursday by going 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a career-high four runs and a walk in SDSU's 14-12 win over Oklahoma State. The following day she went 1-for-2 with a solo homer, three runs and a walk in San Diego State's 10-1, five-inning win over Bethune-Cookman. On Saturday in a 3-1 loss to fellow 2015 NCAA tournament opponent Nebraska, Peres had a triple. She was then 2-for-2 with a pair of two-run homers, four RBIs and two walks (one intentional) in the Aztecs' 5-4 setback to CSUN (also a 2015 NCAA tournament team) in the nightcap on Saturday. Peres finished the weekend with a 3-for-4 outing with a RBI and a stolen base in the Aztecs' 7-4 victory over Stanford on Sunday.
On the season Peres is batting .625 (10-for-16) with four homers, 10 RBIs, 12 runs, five walks, a 1.500 slugging percentage and a .714 on-base percentage in just six games. She leads SDSU in batting average, runs, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base percentage.
Last year Peres was the MW Freshman of the Year, a first-team all-MW selection and a second-team NFCA all-West Region pick and later played on the USA Junior Women's National Team.
San Diego State co-hosts the San Diego Classic I this weekend, beginning with No. 16/14 Texas A&M at 7 p.m. PST Friday.
