SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - The No. 38 San Diego State men's tennis team earned its second victory of the 2016 dual season in convincing fashion, knocking off St. Mary's with a 4-0 win at Cal Poly's Mustang Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon.
San Diego State improves to 2-3, beating St. Mary's in the teams' first meeting, while the Gaels fall to 1-2.
The Aztecs won the doubles point from the Nos. 2 and 3 spots. In the No, 3 spot, Jonas Meinzer and Sander Gjoels-Andersen topped Nash Vollenweider and Manuel De Luis Lamelas 6-2. Milen Ianakiev and Santiago Cevallos secured the doubles point from court No. 2 for the Scarlet and Black with a 6-1 victory over Jacob Lagman and Daniel Krutik.
In singles play, Ianakiev kept the Aztecs rolling in the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-2 win over James Markiewicz. In the No. 5 spot, Cornelius Kolb recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Krutik. Freddy Gelbrich secured the victory for San Diego State from court No. 1, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Thomas Alexander Hunt.
The Aztecs face Cal Poly tomorrow for a Sunday matinee at Mustang Tennis Complex. Action is slated to begin at noon.
