SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. ââ'¬" The 20th-ranked San Diego State women's golf team sits in third place after shooting a combined 13-over par 589 on Monday during the first two rounds of the Bruin Wave Invitational at the par-72, 6,250-yard San Luis Obispo Country Club. After finishing the morning session in seventh at 11-over 299, the Aztecs trimmed nine strokes off their collective score in the afternoon with a 2-over 290 to climb four spots in the standings.

With its total, SDSU remains three shots in back of Arizona State (-10) and 13 strokes in back of tournament co-host UCLA (E), while Oklahoma State (+15) and California (+17) occupy the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.

Individually, the Aztecs were led by Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), who landed in a three-way tie for fifth after carding a 1-under 143. The SDSU senior was plagued by four bogeys and a double-bogey en route to an uncharacteristic 75 before rebounding in the second round with a strong 68. Henrikson sank six birdies in the afternoon against two bogeys, featuring a successful conversion on the par-4, 379-yard 15th, which ranked as the third-toughest hole of the day.

With her total, Henrikson, who entered the week as the No. 6 player in the latest Golfstat Cup standings, finds herself just two shots off the pace heading into Tuesday's final round. UCLA's Lilia Vu fired a 3-under 141 to grab a slim one-stroke advantage on the over fellow teammate Bronte Law, Sophia Zeeb of Arizona State and New Mexico's Ingrid Gutierrez, who all completed the first 36 holes at 2-under 142.

In addition, the Aztecs' Georgia Lacey (Del Mar, Calif.) remains in contention after finishing the first two rounds in a tie for ninth at 1-over 145. The Torrey Pines High alumna posted rounds of 72 and 73, highlighted three birdies in the morning, including back-to-back makes on the No. 6 and 7 greens. Despite logging just one birdie in the second round, Lacey managed to offset the sting of two bogeys with 15 pars, including five straight to end the day.

Elsewhere, Sirene Blair (South Jordan, Utah) overcame a slow start to vault 17 places into a tie for 24th at 5-over 150. The SDSU junior stumbled out the gates with three bogeys and a double-bogey on four of her first five holes en route to a 77. Blair also notched four bogeys during her afternoon round of 73, but managed to minimize the damage with a trio of birdies, including consecutive conversions on the ninth and 10th holes.

Meanwhile, Mila Chaves (Asunción, Paraguay) sits one shot in back of Blair in a five-way tie for 26th at 6-over 151 on rounds of 75-76. Despite tying for third in the field with seven overall birdies, the Aztec sophomore was plagued by eight bogeys on the day, along with a triple-bogey on the par-5 10th in round on, as well as a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 6 in the afternoon.

Rounding out the SDSU delegation was Hana Furuichi (San Diego, Calif.), who carded a 14-over 158 to tie for the 58th spot after 36 holes. In her first-ever varsity start, the Aztec freshman followed her morning round of 81 with a 77, highlighted by a birdie on the par-5 No. 1, which ranked as the fifth-most difficult hole on Monday.

The Bruin Wave Invitational concludes on Tuesday when San Diego State tees off for the final round alongside UCLA, Arizona State and Oklahoma State, beginning at 8:30 a.m. PT on hole No. 1.
