The San Diego State softball team wrapped up its play in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a 7-4 win over Stanford Sunday afternoon in Cathedral City, Calif. The Aztecs improved to 10-5 on the season, while the Cardinal dropped to 7-7.

SDSU broke up a 0-0 game with four runs in the top of the third inning, beginning with a RBI single by senior Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) to score junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.). Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) followed with a double down the right field line that scored sophomore Zaria Meshack (Vallejo, Calif.). After a popout, redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS) ripped a single to left field to plate Ruiz and Camello. Altogether, San Diego State had five hits in the inning.

Junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) made it 6-0 Aztecs in the fourth with a two-run home run down the left field line. It was her third of the season, equaling her total from the entire 2015 campaign.

Stanford made it a game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs, thanks to three homers.

After leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, SDSU struck again in the sixth when Ignacio scored on a single by sophomore Jenavee Peres (Garden Grove, Calif.).

The Cardinal would never threaten again, securing the win for San Diego State. The Aztecs are now 4-2 against teams from a Power 5 Conference and 2-0 vs. the Pac-12.

Peres had three hits to lead SDSU, which outhit Stanford, 13-9, for the game. Ignacio had two hits, two RBIs and two runs, while Camello recorded two hits, an RBI and a run. Ruiz and freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) each singled and walked, and Cable singled and scored two runs.

Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) earned the start and surrendered two runs on five hits, striking out one.
