SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State rowing team competed in the second set of races in as many days on Sunday. The Aztecs faced the Trojans for their second race of the season. SDSU finished behind USC in all four races Sunday morning.
The first race of the day began at 9:30 a.m. as the two school's third eights took to the water. The Trojans crossed the finish line with a time of 5 minutes, 55.3 seconds followed by SDSU (6:10.7). The next race of the day got underway at 9:40 a.m. The four crews faced off with USC finishing with a time of 6:03.4 and the Aztecs clocked a time of 6:31.5. The third race of the day paired up the second eights. Southern California recorded a time of 5:31.9 followed by SDSU with a time of 5:51.4. The final race saw the two first eights square off at 10 am. USC finished with a time of 5:19.6 with San Diego State behind with a time of 5:35.2.
"Although we would have liked to have been closer to USC, today actually was a good day for the team," said head coach Bill Zack. "With it being the first official race for the four and the third eight, nine women rowed in their first collegiate spring race. That experience will be very beneficial as we get into the heart of race season. Both the second eight, and the first eight in particular, improved from their races on Saturday. They were better in their pre-race preparation and did a much better job of executing their race plan, particularly with regard to stroke rate. Today we talked about making sure we restart the tradition of racing against USC every spring."
San Diego State will next travel north to Marina Del Rey, Calif., to face UCLA on March 5. The first race is scheduled for 8 am.
