In a game that started an hour late and featured 26 hits, 26 runs, seven errors and eight lead changes, the San Diego State softball team downed Oklahoma State, 14-12, Thursday night at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic in Cathedral City, Calif. The Aztecs won their fifth straight game and are now 8-3 on the season.

Down, 11-9, in the bottom of the sixth inning, SDSU essentially put the game away with five runs on four hits and two walks. The big hits in the decisive innings came on a two-run double by redshirt freshman Katie Byrd (Santee, Calif./West Hills HS), RBI singles by Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) and junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.), and a fielder's choice RBI by junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.).

Byrd led the San Diego State offense with three hits, four RBIs and a run, while junior Jaylene Ignacio (Oceanside, Calif./El Camino HS) (1-for-2, R, RBI, 2 BB) and sophomore Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) (1-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 R, 2 BB) each reached base safely two times.

Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) and Sturdivant added two hits apiece.

Sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) picked up her first win with the Aztecs after pitching the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run on a hit and five innings, while striking out two. Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) started the game and yielded four runs on five hits and two walks over 1 2/3 innings. Junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) pitched the middle 2 2/3 innings and gave up seven runs (five earned) on seven hits, while striking out five.

The Aztecs play Bethune-Cookman at 6 p.m. PST Friday.
