ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Bonnie Draxler captured her second consecutive indoor Mountain West pole vault title and Micha Auzenne set a school record in the prelims of the 60-meter dash to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the second day of the MW Indoor Championships Friday in Albuquerque, N.M.

The Aztecs moved from ninth after the first day to a tie for third with Wyoming today at 32 points. Only Colorado State (46) and Boise State (41.5) are ahead of SDSU with 11 events still to be contested tomorrow.

"We know that we had to overcome a deficit on paper and I'm proud that our Aztecs are stepping up," head coach Shelia Burrell said. "Tomorrow we simply have to walk by faith."

Draxler won the event with a vault of 13 feet, 9 ¼ inches (4.20m) after winning last year's championship as a freshman in 13-08.50 (4.17m). The 13-09.25 is the sixth-best mark in indoor school history. The Aztecs have now won 21 MW titles in the pole vault out of a possible 33 tries (indoor and outdoor).

"(The first title) last year was nice because I was a freshman," Draxler said. "This year might have even been better. To win and have another freshman teammate (Marissa Berry) on the podium was awesome. It's a good feeling to be a part of such a legacy of good pole vaulters (at SDSU). I will be cheering on my teammates tomorrow for the team championship."

Berry added a third-place showing in the event, clearing 13-01.50 (4.00m), also the ninth-best vault in program history.

A day after coming in fourth in the pentathlon, Kassidy Ellis took third in the open long jump with a leap of 18-10.75 (5.76m). Lisa-Anne Barrow (18-08.50 (5.70m)) and Jelena McNown (18-04.25 (5.59m)) also scored for SDSU, taking fifth and eighth, respectively.

Auzenne, meanwhile, set the school record in the 60 with a time of 7.32 seconds, bettering San Diego State Hall-of-Fame member Tonette Dyer's best of 7.33, set in 2004. The time was the fastest of the prelim heats with the final scheduled for 1:10 p.m. MT Saturday.

Auzenne also ran the fastest 60-meter hurdle time of the prelims in 8.38. The defending MW champion in the event, Auzenne will run the finals at 12:30 p.m. PT Saturday.

Ashley Henderson was just behind Auzenne in the 60 prelims, clocking a time of 7.35. It was the second-fastest time behind Auzenne and the third-fastest in program history (Auzenne, Dyer). Henderson also ran the fourth-fastest 200 in 24.06 to qualify for tomorrow's finals.

Simone Glenn clocked the fastest 200 of the prelims in 23.86, also the fifth-fastest time in program history. Glenn also advanced in the 60, taking seventh in 7.54 (No. 10 all-time at SDSU).

Sierra Brabham-Lawrence only trailed Auzenne in the prelims of the 60 hurdles, taking second in 8.45. Madison Gipson (fourth, 8.55) and Ellis (eighth, 8.66) also moved into Saturday's finals in the event.

The school-record holder in the 800, Ellison Grove ran the second-fastest time in the first heat (sixth overall) to automatically qualify for tomorrow's final with a time of 2:10.95.

Jazmen Bunch also made it to the finals in both the 200 (sixth, 24.46) and the 60 (eighth, 7.57).

San Diego State first competes on Saturday at 10 a.m. MT with the shot put and end the day with the 4x400-meter relay at 2:45 p.m. MT.
