SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State Aztec baseball team will travel to Lake Elsinore this evening to take on the University of San Diego at 6:30 p.m. The contest will be played on The Diamond, the home venue of the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Class A affiliate of the San Diego Padres.
Both the Aztecs and Toreros have found the going rough in the early season. USD comes into this evening's contest with a record of 0-3 after dropping three contests at No. 3 Vanderbilt last weekend.
SDSU (1-3) opened the season with three losses to No. 14 Oregon before rebounding with a 4-2 win at UC Irvine on Tuesday.
USD is expected to send senior right-hander Gary Cornish (0-0, 10-80) to the mound where he will be opposed by Aztec junior right-hander Mike Diamond (0-0, 12.00).
Offensively, the Toreros are led by catcher Riley Adams (.400, 2B, 3 RBI) and infielder Bryson Brigman (.364, 2B, 3 RBI). USD hit .235 as a team in the three games at Vanderbilt while posting a 12.38 earned run average.
SDSU's top hitters in the early going include first freshman baseman Jordan Verdon (.333, HR) and designated hitter David Hensley (.333, 2 2B, 3 RBI). Hensley has doubled in three of SDSU's first four contests after hitting a total of four in 24 contests a year ago.
San Diego State has a team batting average of .248 with a 4.75 earned run average coming into tonight's contest.
Following tonight's game the Aztecs will host part of the first Tony Gwynn Classic that gets underway on Friday, Feb. 26. Kentucky and UC Santa Barbara will play the opener at 1:00 p.m. with San Diego State taking on Bryant at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
