SAN DIEGO - San Diego State softball player Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) has been named the Mountain West Pitcher of the Week, the league announced today. It is the first weekly award for Romero this season and fifth of her career.

A junior right-hander, Romero helped the Aztecs (7-3) to a 4-1 record at the 26th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic last weekend, tied with No. 18/19 Kentucky for the best record at the tournament.

Romero went 3-0 with a 2.42 ERA over 17 1/3 innings, striking out 14 batters against four walks. She pitched in four of the team's five games, completing both games she started.

Romero pitched the middle four innings of a 5-1 loss to UK on Thursday, allowing three runs on five hits, while striking out two.

In a 2-1 SDSU win vs. South Dakota on Friday, Romero got the win after tossing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, giving up two hits with one strikeout. In the nightcap, a 13-3, run-rule victory over Texas Tech, she tossed a complete game, allowing three runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks over five innings, while striking out a career-high eight batters.

Romero ended her fine weekend in San Diego State's 2-1 triumph over No. 22/25 California on Saturday, giving up one run on six hits (all singles) and a walk over seven innings, while striking out three. She allowed only one baserunner on a hit over the final three innings vs. Cal.

On the season, Romero is 5-0 with a 1.95 ERA in 28 2/3 innings in the circle, striking out 25 against just four walks. She has pitched in eight of the team's 10 games and has limited her opponents to a .245 average.

The Aztecs travel to Cathedral City, Calif., this weekend for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, beginning Thursday with Oklahoma State at 8:30 p.m. PST.
