SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The San Diego State Aztec baseball team, three-time defending Mountain West champion, will get its 2016 season underway this evening when it hosts No. 14 Oregon at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Aztecs return five starting position players and 10 pitchers from a team that finished with a 41-23 record a year ago, winning the conference tournament and advancing to the NCAA Regionals for the third consecutive season.
Oregon, meanwhile has eight starters back from its 2015 squad that compiled a record of 38-25 and also played in the NCAA Regional Tournament.
The Ducks are expected to start a trio of left-handers on the mound this weekend beginning with junior Cole Irvin (2-5, 4.10 in 2015). The Aztecs will counter with junior left-hander Marcus Reyes (7-3, 4.20).
Top returnees for SDSU include outfielders Chase Calabuig (.305, 8 2B, 25 RBI, Freshman All-American in 2015) and Spencer Thornton (.317, 7 2B, 2 HR, 23 RBI, 2015 All-Mountain West Tournament).
In addition to Reyes, SDSU's other projected starting pitchers this weekend include right-hander Cody Thompson (4-4, 4.32) and left-hander Brett Seeburger (1-0, 7.39).
