SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team opens its home portion of the 2016 schedule this weekend with the 26th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic at SDSU Softball Stadium.
This year's classic features six teams, including the Aztecs (3-2), No. 18/19 Kentucky, No. 22/25 California, San Diego, South Dakota and Texas Tech.
The six teams will play a combined 15 games over the four days with two on Thursday, five on Friday, five on Saturday and three on Sunday.
SDSU will play host to Kentucky (3-1) at 6 p.m. PST Thursday, South Dakota (0-5) (4:30 p.m. PST) and Texas Tech (3-2) (7 p.m. PST) on Friday, No. 22/25 California (5-1) at 7 p.m. PST Saturday and San Diego (2-3) at 2 p.m. PST Sunday.
The tournament is named after Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, who lost their lives during the 1991 softball season in a single-car accident that took place in Rosarito, Mexico. It left a lasting mark on teammates, coaches and the program. To pay tribute to Campbell and Cartier, the Aztec softball team renamed the SDSU Spring Classic in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in memory of their friendship and fine athletic ability.
Seniors Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) and Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) have led the SDSU offense through one weekend, each batting .389. Camello has added four runs, two doubles, two triples and an RBI, while Ruiz has three runs and two RBIs.
Four pitchers have combined to post a 1.97 ERA in 32 innings so far, led by junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) and her 2-0 record and 1.24 ERA. Redshirt junior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif.) (1-1, 1.31 ERA) and freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) (0-0, 1.83 ERA) have also posted ERA's below 2.00 to add depth to the staff.
