SANTEE, Calif. - San Diego State men's golfer Pablo Matesanz (Irun, Spain) claimed medalist honors as an individual competitor on Tuesday at the Carlton Oaks WIU Invitational, hosted by Western Illinois University. The Aztec sophomore posted a combined 4-under par 212, highlighted by second-round 69, to capture his first collegiate victory by four strokes over Lloyd Jefferson Go of Seton Hall on the par-72, 7,117-yard Carlton Oaks Country Club layout.

Matesanz entered the tournament's final day in second place one shot behind another Seton Hall player, Gen Nagai, but surged into the lead on the strength of four birdies and 11 pars, including eight straight on the back nine, to complete his round at 1-under 71. Conversely, Nagai tumbled into third at 2-over 218 after carding a final-round 78, sinking just one birdie on the afternoon against four bogeys and a triple bogey on the par-5 No. 9.

SDSU had three additional individuals compete at the two-day 54-hole event, which featured teams from Bradley, Butler, Cal State San Marcos, Cal State Dominguez Hills, as well as the aforementioned Western Illinois and Seton Hall squads.

Aztec sophomore PJ Samiere (Kailua, Hawaii) tied Nagai for third in the field of 41 players at 2-over, while junior Brian Song (Beverly Hills, Calif.) finished a solo fifth at 4-over 220. Song entered the final round just three shots in back of the lead, but faltered down the stretch with six bogeys on the back nine en route to a 77. Rounding out the SDSU contingent was freshman Otto Vanhatalo (Espoo, Finland), who tied for 12th at 11-over 227.

San Diego State, which is ranked 23rd in the latest Golfstat ratings, returns to the fairways in two weeks when it competes at the Southwestern Jones Invitational, Feb. 29-March 1, at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif.
