COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The San Diego State swimming and diving team finds itself in third place after the opening day of the 2016 Mountain West Championships being contested at Texas A&M in San College Station, Texas. The Aztecs trail Nevada and Boise State after the first three events of the four-day conference title meet.
The Aztecs opened Wednesday evening's finals session with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Kate Santilena, Cecilia Zaccarelli, Summer Harrison and Taylor Johnson turned in a time of 1:39.25, a time that goes into the SDSU record book as the fourth-fastest in program history.
In the 1-meter diving competition, sophomore Alexandra Caplan captured third place in the finals with a mark 330.15 after scoring 307.20 to place second in the prelim. Caplan's score in the finals established as new SDSU record as she bettered her own record (323.78) which she set in the dual meet vs. the University of San Diego in late January.
Fellow soph Payton Gabris took third (of eight divers) in the consolation finals with a score of 266.45 after having placed 13th in the prelims with a mark of 239.70. SDSU's other competitors included Makena Chamoures (235.95 ââ'¬" 20th) and Nicole Dutton (228.80 ââ'¬" 22nd).
The evening's final event saw the Aztec 800 freestyle relay team of Whitney Weisz, Natilee Ruiz, Martina Marks and Savannah Miller capture third place with a time of 7:13.74. That mark goes into the school record listings as the sixth-best time ever in that race.
Action continues on Thursday morning with prelims in the 500 freestyle, 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle and 3-meter diving set to get underway at 9:00 a.m. (PT). Finals in those vents plus the 200 freestyle relay will take place staring at 4:30 p.m. (PT).
