Freshman Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) and junior Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) combined on a four-hit shutout in a 2-0 win by the San Diego State softball team over UTSA Sunday at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs improved to 3-2 with the victory, while the Roadrunners dropped to 2-3.

McDonald started the game and allowed two hits and a walk over 2 2/3 innings before giving way to Romero (2-0). Romero struck out six over the final 4 1/3 innings of relief, yielding just two hits. Romero has not given up a run in 10 innings, allowing just three hits over that span, while striking out 11.

SDSU got all the offense it would need in the bottom of the third inning. Sophomore Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) got things going with a two-out single to move junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to second base. Junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) followed with an infield single to load the bases for freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.), who was hit by a pitch on a 2-2 count to score Cable. Senior Stefania Aradillas (Mexico City) then singled up the middle to plate Stewart with the final run of the game.

Seniors Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) and Leia Ruiz (Chino, Calif.) each added singles to San Diego State and both had at least one hit in all five games for the Aztecs over the weekend.

SDSU plays host to the 26th annual Campbell/Cartier Classic this weekend, beginning Thursday with No. 18/18 Kentucky at 6 p.m. PST.
