The San Diego State women's tennis team earned an early lead over No. 45 Saint Mary's by claiming the doubles point but could not capitalize, narrowly falling, 4-3. The Aztecs were unable to halt the Gaels' singles rally and fall to 2-5 on the season with Saturday's result.
In doubles play, Kennedy Davis and Paola Diaz de Regules downed Kareena Manji and Aniek Van Rossum in the third spot, 6-3. In the top spot, Jana McCord and Jamie Pawid gave the Gaels life as the duo defeated Isabelle Hoorn and Taylor Lederman, 6-3. Jana Buth and Tami Nguyen claimed the point for SDSU as the two downed Parimnder Kaur and Christine Clement, 6-3, on court No. 2.
In singles action, Pawid evened the score for the Gaels as she defeated Davis, 6-2, 6-1. On court No. 5, Manji gave Saint Mary's the lead as she topped Lederman, 6-4, 6-3. In the fourth spot, Clement brought the Gaels within a point of victory as she got past Diaz, 6-3, 6-4. McCord secured the decision for SMC as she was able to get past Nguyen in the top spot, 6-4, 7-6 (12). On court No. 6, Hoorn topped Kaur in three sets, 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. In the third position, Buth gave the Aztecs their third and final point as she took down Van Rossum, 6-1, 6-7, 6-3.
San Diego State will return to Aztec Tennis Center for a two-match homestand. SDSU will face No. 65 Hawai'i on Feb. 16 and UC Irvine on Feb. 18. Both matches are scheduled for a 2 p.m. start.
