Ellison Grove broke an indoor school record in the 800-meter run to lead the San Diego State track and field team on the final day of the Don Kirby Collegiate Invitational Saturday in Albuquerque, N.M.
Grove ran a time of 2 minutes, 9.67 seconds (2:09.67) to break the previous Aztec best of 2:10.45, set by Mandy Upuu in 2008. The record was even more impressive given the fact that the time was run at 5,312 feet of elevation (Upuu ran her time at sea level and on a 307-meter track in Seattle). Grove ended up finishing in third place out of 24 entrants in the four-lap (for indoor) event.
SDSU also shined in the pole vault, led once again by Bonnie Draxler. Draxler finished fourth of 23 entrants by clearing 13 feet, 8 ¼ inches (4.17m). Marissa Berry followed in eighth with a mark of 12-10.25 (3.92m), tied for the 10th-best vault in indoor school history, while Karen Snapper came in 15th at 12-04.50 (3.77m). Former San Diego State athlete Kristen Brown won the event with a USA Track & Field Indoor Championship qualifying mark of 14-06.00 (4.42m).
Ashley Henderson finished sixth in the finals of the 60-meter dash in 7.44 after taking fifth in the semifinals in 7.43. Yesterday, Henderson logged Aztec all-time top-10 times in both the 60 (prelims) and the 200.
Elaine Ribeiro just missed a personal record (PR) in the mile, running a time of 5:08.94 for a 10th-place showing, while Sierra Brabham-Lawrence was 16th in the semifinals of the 60 hurdles (8.81).
Also impressing on the final day of the meet was Je'Neal Ainsworth in the triple jump. She finished 19th out of 37 entrants with a leap of 38-09.50 (11.82m).
SDSU returns to the Albuquerque Convention Center for the Mountain West Indoor Championships from Feb. 25-27.
