SAN DIEGO - No. 18 San Diego State stopped a three-game losing streak by defeating Sonoma State, 15-3, Saturday afternoon at the UCSD Triton Invitational. The victory evened the Aztecs' record at the tournament (1-1) and improved their overall record to 2-4.
SDSU had three different players score goals in the first 1:45 of the game to help the Aztecs take a 3-0 lead. Caroline Israels, Nikole Ferrari and Alyssa Diacono each tickled the twine before the Seawolves' Kaysie Lewis stopped the scoring run. San Diego State later received goals on back-to-back possessions from Ferrari and Diacono to push the SDSU lead to 5-1. Sonoma State's Carleigh Robinson answered right before the end of the quarter to make it a 5-2 game.
The Aztecs would end up shutting out the Seawolves over the second and third quarters while posting four goals of their own in each frame. In the second, SDSU saw Taylor Gums, Tayla Walsh and Brigette Kimbrough (twice) score goals. Then after halftime, Katrina King, Courtney Jarvis, Mikayla Vessey and Katy Schneider all found the back of the net to help San Diego State take a 13-2 lead into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, the scoring slowed substantially, but it was Sonoma State that responded first as Taylor Brown posted her first goal of the day. The Aztecs closed the game with goals from Schneider and Nika Sedghi to provide the final margin.
SDSU returns to the UC San Diego campus on Sunday when it plays at 10:40 a.m. PT in Canyonview Pool. The Aztecs will face either CSUN or Long Beach State, which is set for Saturday at 4:30 p.m. PT.
