FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman Kiera Wright (Riverside, Calif.) scored on a fielding error in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the San Diego State softball team a 2-1 win over UTSA and salvage a split Saturday at the Titan Classic in Fullerton, Calif. The Aztecs, who lost to UTSA, 3-2, earlier in the day, are now 2-2 on the season.

With the scored tied at 1-1 in the nightcap, sophomore Taylor Stewart (Bellflower, Calif.) hit a two-out single through the right side to move junior Sydnee Cable (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to third base. After Wright replaced Cable at third and freshman Aris Medcalfe (Compton, Calif.) entered for Stewart, junior Frankie Orlando (Roseville, Calif.) reached on a fielding error by the Wildcats' (2-1) shortstop, which allowed Wright to race home with the eventual game-winning run.

Junior right-hander Erica Romero (Corona, Calif.) then retired WSU in order in the top of the seventh to give SDSU the victory. In fact, Romero (1-0) retired all 12 batters she faced in order after replacing freshman starter Julie McDonald (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad HS) in the fourth inning. Romero struck out four batters over the four innings and only allowed three batters out of the infield.

McDonald gave up one run on five hits over the first three innings of the game.

Senior Samantha Camello (Temecula, Calif.) had two hits, including a triple for the second straight game, and scored a run to pace the San Diego State offense. Ruiz also had an RBI single, while Stewart and freshman Molly Sturdivant (Santa Ana, Calif.) added singles.

In the opener, the Aztecs outhit the Roadrunners (1-2), 9-4, but left eight runners on base in the 3-2 loss.

SDSU took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Camello led off the game with a triple and scored when Ruiz reached on a fielding error. San Diego State ended up loading the bases in the inning on three hits and an error altogether, but was unable to get another run across the plate.

UTSA loaded the bases in the third with one out on a fielding error and two walks, and Bailee Baldwin cleared them with a double to center field. It would be the final hit for the Roadrunners in the game.

The Aztecs responded in the fourth when Orlando led off with a double and was replaced by Wright. After a flyout, senior Stefania Aradillas (Mexico City) singled to left field to score Wright and bring SDSU within a run at 3-2.

San Diego State, however, left runners on in each of the final four innings, including two in the sixth, in the one-run loss.

Ruiz led the Aztecs with two hits, while seven others added a hit apiece.

Redshirt junior Ashley Ercolano (Poway, Calif.) took the loss after allowing two runs (one earned) on three walks and three hits over 2 1/3 innings. Sophomore Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched the final 4 2/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit and three walks, while striking out four.

SDSU wraps up its play in the Titan Classic at 10 a.m. PST Sunday with a rematch vs. UTSA.
