SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women’s tennis team will travel to The Emerald City to face No. 34 Washington followed by a matchup with No. 45 Saint Mary’s. The competition against the Huskies will be held at 4 p.m. on Feb. 12. The next day the Aztecs will take on the Gaels at 1 p.m.
On Friday, SDSU will face Washington in its first match outside of the state of California. All of San Diego State’s competitions have been in America’s Finest City, save for last Sunday’s loss to No. 18 Pepperdine in Malibu, Calif. With last week’s dropped decision, the Aztecs are 2-3 on the season with their two victories coming against UC Riverside to open the season and a 4-3 edge of UC Davis on Feb. 6.
The 34th-ranked Huskies are 7-1 in dual-match play this season. Most recently, UW upset No. 15 Baylor, 4-3, in Waco, Texas. The lone loss for Washington came at the hands of No. 6 California, a 4-0 decision. The Huskies have two doubles teams ranked in the national standings. Tami Grende and Miki Kobayashi stand at No. 31 followed by the 46th-ranked duo of Elianne Douglas-Miron and Stacey Fung.
Last year, the Aztecs saw two hard fought victories in singles play but the two points were not enough to topple then-ranked No. 51 Washington. The Huskies walked away with a 5-2 decision.
On Saturday, the Aztecs will move on to challenge No. 45 Saint Mary’s in a neutral-site match in Seattle. The Gaels are 1-4 on the season and are most recently coming off of a 6-1 loss to No. 8 Stanford. All three of the Gaels’ most recent matches have been on the road and have been losses coming at the hands of teams ranked in the top 25.
Last season, SDSU staged a rally in singles play but the effort fell short as Saint Mary’s defeated San Diego State, 5-2, at Aztec Tennis Center.
Following the road trip to the northwest, San Diego State will return home on Feb. 16 to play host to Hawai’i. First serve is set for 2 p.m. at Aztec Tennis Center.
